Human rights: Making them
work for the people of the UK

Welcome to the site of Human rights: Making them work for the people of the UK
a book written by Robert Broadhurst, a researcher specialising in European matters who works in the House of Commons.

In 2011, some of the Members of Parliament for whom Robert works asked him to write a publication analysing where human rights law had gone wrong, and what could be done to put it right.

This was prompted by court rulings that have sought to introduce controversial interpretations of human rights into UK law. One example of these is the ruling of the European Court of Human Rights that at least some convicted prisoners must be given the vote, something currently prohibited by an Act of Parliament.

The resultant book, Human rights: Making them work for the people of the UK, examines some of the much-criticised judgements based on human rights, before setting out an alternative approach that would allow human rights to command the widespread support they deserve.

Under the book's proposals, the European Court of Human Rights would no longer be able to impose interpretations of human rights on the UK that the British people believed were distortions of such rights. This would be achieved either by an amendment to the European Convention on Human Rights (the treaty on which the European Court of Human Rights is based) or, if such an amendment could not be obtained, the UK's withdrawal from the Convention.

In parallel, the UK Parliament would replace the Human Rights Act with a British Bill of Rights, which would enshrine human rights in UK law, but which would also ensure that the final word on legislation rested with Parliament, as the democratically accountable legislature.

Ten Conservative Members of Parliament have written a foreword to the book, endorsing its recommendations for action. They are:
